The Still Alive Blog

Still Alice Cake form the end of Portal

It’s almost the end of 2025, and much of it has been spent developing the magazine and this website. In turn, I have not been able to focus as much or deliver as I had intended. We had started the year off strong with the Kickstarter for issue 3 reaching its funding goal, but then things took a turn for me.

I want to talk about what matters to me and how it influences this project. We (the FEARZINE community), of course, come together in the camaraderie of our love for horror as a genre, specifically video games, but not exclusively. I have felt an overwhelming sense of belonging as this community has grown over the past year or so. Maria and I coined the phrase “Horrifically Wholesome” to describe what everyone here represents. We are here because of our passion for an entertainment experience that centers around violence, blood, gore, and the sensation of feeling alive through terror. Among you, I have found an immense sense of caring, joy, and genuineness that I’ve not experienced elsewhere.

What I want to talk about is how life can truly suck at times, and how, as human beings, we are social creatures who, when going through challenges, require assistance, guidance, and general reassurance from others. We may not always ask for or seek these things, but need them. I myself went through a challenging experience earlier in the year and struggled with it immensely. Adding the additional pressure I put on myself to complete the magazine in the time I said we would didn’t help. I did finally find help via friends and some therapy, and have been working to improve myself and grow stronger from it. It is part of this vulnerability that I am now able to open up and write this blog, in the hopes of connecting with any of you on a deeper level.

It is now a critical part of my approach to do what I can to strengthen this community in a meaningful way and to let everyone know that I, for one, want the best for everyone. I have received a lot of feedback letting me know that what I and we at Fearzine do is very appreciated, which means a lot. I was given some excellent advice by a friend recently on how to better engage with my community, and doing a “Shitty Blog” was one of them. I laughed at this notion and agreed with the sentiment. So now here I am, writing my shitty blog, for all of you to enjoy.

This will be my place to post about real life, things I am doing in and out of the magazine, video games I am playing, or things I find interesting and want to share with you all. I plan to post these on occasion, mostly unedited and off the cuff, and I hope you find some value in reading them. I invite you to share your own thoughts and feelings. Let’s talk about what we love and why. Things we are upset about and wish were better. I invite any of you to our Discord and to chat with us there, and find your people. If you are struggling, let’s try to help. Mental health is a real problem, and people need guidance. I hope to one day utilize our platform to benefit mental health agencies and make it a core value of our community.

I have had an awful year and a fantastic year. I won’t say it was a bad year. The good certainly outweighed the bad, and I am still alive. Still alive and loving what I do, what we do, and all the good I hope it brings.

I look forward to sharing more with you all and bringing us together to experience all the great games out there.

So welcome! I am Still Alive and ready to survive the next “nightmare.”
